    Measuring Principle of Boiler Glass

Reflex type boiler glass works on the principle of refraction and reflection of light through a specially designed prism glass. The glass has ridges on one side, facing the liquid and reflecting light differently depending on whether they are in contact with liquid or vapor. This makes it easy to distinguish the liquid level in the tank with the naked eye.

Reflective level gauges are specifically designed to provide a clear visual indication of the liquid level in a vessel by exploiting the differences in the optical properties of liquids and gases (vapors). The design and function of the level gauge is optimized to differentiate between the liquid zone and the gas (or vapor) zone. Here is how these zones are defined and function in the context of a reflective level gauge:

    Liquid Zone

In the liquid zone of a reflective level gauge, the prism glass face on the front of the level gauge is in contact with the liquid. The prisms are designed so that when liquid is present, it fills the glass channels and allows light to pass through with minimal reflection. This makes the liquid zone appear dark when viewed from the front. The reason for this darkness is due to the absorption of the liquid and minimal reflection of light, enhancing the visibility and contrast between the liquid zone and the gas zone.

    Gas/Vapor Zone

In contrast, in the gas or vapor region, there is no liquid filling the grooves in the prism glass. The structure of the glass causes the incident light to reflect significantly due to the presence of air or vapor. This reflection causes the gas/vapor region to appear brighter or silvery, in sharp contrast to the darker liquid region. This distinct visual difference makes it easy for the operator to determine the exact liquid level inside the tank or vessel.

    Transfarent Boiler Level Glass

Transfarent boiler level glasses are a simple design consisting of a transparent glass tube through which the amount of liquid in the vessel can be directly observed. This type of boiler level glass allows observation of not only the liquid level but also the characteristics of the liquid, such as color and clarity.

Transfarent boiler level glasses are designed for direct observation of the liquid level in vessels and containers. The construction of these glasses is relatively simple, with an emphasis on visibility and durability.

    Components:

Glass: The core component of a clear level gauge is one or more pieces of clear, sturdy glass. This glass needs to withstand the pressure, temperature, and chemical nature of the fluid it comes into contact with. Typically, they are made from borosilicate glass and are highly resistant to thermal shock and chemical corrosion.

Body: The body of a boiler level gauge is usually made from metal, such as stainless steel or brass. It houses and protects the glass and includes a chamber that aligns with the level of the fluid in the tank.

Seals and gaskets: Seals and gaskets prevent leakage and secure the glass inside the body. They are typically made from materials such as Teflon, Viton, asbestos, and lead and are resistant to heat and chemical degradation.

Valve: Valves are incorporated into the design to isolate the level gauge from the fluid during maintenance or in the event of glass breakage. These valves usually have a safety mechanism that automatically shuts off the flow if the glass breaks.

Vent and drain plug: To facilitate maintenance, cleaning and draining of the meter, a vent and drain plug is included in the design.

The most common use of a boiler sight glass is to measure water levels in steam boilers. In this context, a water level glass serves as an important component of the water level control system of a steam boiler. Its function is to provide a visual means for the operator to monitor and verify the actual water level in the boiler system. This water level glass is connected to the boiler at two points: the top and the bottom. The water inside the boiler will settle at the same height as in the water level glass, providing an accurate reflection of the boiler water level.

A boiler sight glass is used to measure the water level in a boiler according to the communicating vessel principle. When the sight glass is installed in a boiler sight glass assembly, this sight glass assembly has valves at both ends. When the valve is opened, hot water from the boiler flows into the sight glass assembly and the sight glass will indicate how full or empty the boiler is.

The operator can use this visual representation to safely manage the water level inside the boiler. For example, if the water level is too high, it can lead to inefficient operation and the possibility of overflow. Conversely, if the water level is too low, it can lead to overheating and the possibility of boiler damage.

The ability to accurately monitor the boiler water level using a sight glass is crucial for safe and efficient boiler operation. It allows the operator to add or reduce water as needed, maintaining the correct operating level and avoiding potential risks associated with incorrect water levels.

Fields of Application of a Boiler Sight Glass

Reflex sight glasses are mainly used in industries where accurate level measurement is critical under high pressure conditions. Common applications include boilers, feedwater heaters, oil/water separators and other vessels in the chemical, petrochemical and process industries.

This type of transfarent boiler sight glass is commonly used in tanks or vessels where visual inspection of the liquid is advantageous. Applications can be found in the food and beverage industry, pharmaceuticals and any application involving corrosive liquids where the operator must observe the physical properties of the liquid in addition to the liquid level.

    Limitations of Reflex level gauges

Main limitations of Reflex level gauges is their use with certain liquids. They are less effective with very clean or demineralized liquids, where the difference in refractive index between the liquid and vapor phases is minimal. Additionally, over time, the glass may be corroded by corrosive liquids or clouded by deposits, requiring frequent maintenance or replacement.

The ability to observe through a clear level glass may be hindered by deposits or scale, requiring frequent cleaning. Furthermore, these glass glasses are not suitable for opaque or very thick liquids with limited transparency. They also tend to be more fragile than other types of glass glasses and are limited in their application due to the maximum pressure and temperature the glass can withstand.

Choosing the right type of gasket or gasket for a Boiler Glass

Do you know how to choose the right gasket for this boiler glass?

Gaskets for boiler glass are mainly used to isolate the glass and liquid of the Water Level Glass Valve Assembly. Gaskets mainly include the following types:

    Asbestos gaskets
Asbestos gaskets can withstand temperatures up to 500 degrees Celsius, pressure up to 150 bar, thickness 2mm. But asbestos is toxic, if inhaled asbestos fibers can cause lung cancer, asbestosis. Therefore, Phat Dat recommends that you should not use this type of gasket

Heat-resistant graphite gaskets (Including pure graphite gaskets, iron-graphite gaskets, stainless steel-graphite gaskets)
Heat-resistant graphite gaskets Graphite can withstand temperatures up to 600 degrees Celsius, working pressure 150 bar, thickness 2-3 mm

    Mica gaskets (better corrosion resistance)
Mica gaskets have working temperatures up to 600 degrees Celsius, pressure up to 350 bar. It protects the inner surface of the boiler sight glass from erosion caused by chemical abrasion and corrosive chemical effects of alkaline solution, boiler water. It provides excellent sealing strength against acid, water, oil at high temperature pressure and completely eliminates the risk of cracking…of the boiler sight glass

    PTFE Teflon gasket
Teflon gasket is heat-resistant up to 250 degrees Celsius, anti-corrosion, resistant to acid and alkaline organic solvents, non-toxic to humans.

For different types of boiler sight glass, the available gaskets are also different: for Reflex sight glass, the available gaskets are asbestos gasket, and lead gasket; For transferent transparent flat sight glass, all the above types can be selected.

Phat Dat can provide the above gaskets for boiler sight glass. And we can customize according to the user's size. If you need, you can contact our sales staff to get a quote.

How to Install a Boiler Level Gauge into a Boiler Level Gauge Assembly

Here is a step-by-step method to install a Reflex Level Gauge or Transparent Level Gauge

Step 1: Separate the Boiler Level Gauge from the Pressure and Release the Pressure

First, you need to separate the Boiler Level Gauge from the pressure of the tank that the Boiler Level Gauge is attached to. Then, you should release the pressure inside the Level Gauge to ensure there is no pressure inside. In this way, you will not be sprayed with liquid or hot steam during the process of disassembling and removing the Boiler Level Gauge.

Step 2: Loosen the Bolts on the Faceplate

Next, you should loosen the bolts on the faceplate of the Boiler Level Gauge with a wrench. Alternatively, your Boiler Level Gauge may have tightening bolts located on the back and a simple cover plate on the front. Regardless of where they are located, you need to loosen and remove them.

Step 3: Remove the components of the Boiler Glass

In this step, you should remove the components of the Boiler Glass, including: nuts and bolts, masks, gaskets

Step 4: Clean and check the parts of the Boiler Glass

You have planned to replace the Boiler Glass, so you can also check the other parts of the Boiler Glass to make sure they are working properly. Parts such as the cover plate and steel body, the rotary valve to lock and open the hot water may just need a little cleaning

Step 5: Attach the new heat-resistant gasket to the Boiler Glass

    4.642 / 5.000

Always replace the heat seal when you install a new boiler sight glass. These seals wear and loosen over time, reducing the seal inside the boiler sight glass and increasing the chance of leaks. Step 6: Reinstall the Boiler Sight Glass into the Boiler Sight Glass Assembly Once you have cleaned all the parts and have the new seal and Boiler Sight Glass, it is time to reassemble the boiler sight glass. Install all the parts in the correct order in the reverse order of how you removed them: the steel body, the seal, the boiler sight glass, the seal, and finally the faceplate. Secure the last part – the faceplate – in place with the nuts and bolts. Use a torque wrench for this step and tighten the bolts in a diagonal motion so that the torque is applied evenly to each bolt. The manufacturer of the sight glass will recommend the correct torque. What to do when the boiler water glass assembly is leaking During the operation of the boiler water glass assembly installed on the boiler. One fine day, you hear a hissing sound coming from your boiler water glass assembly. Along with that, you observe the amount of hot steam escaping from the water glass assembly, which is dangerous for others. How to handle this case is as follows: The first thing is to lock the hot steam being supplied to the water glass assembly by turning off the boiler or locking the valve on the pipe (depending on the location where you install the boiler water glass assembly). Remove the bolts of the two flanges on the boiler water glass assembly, remove and move the boiler water glass assembly out of the boiler. The case of the water glass assembly leaking hot steam is mostly due to the fact that after a period of operation, the gasket or gasket is corroded by boiler water or boiler water corrodes the glass part in contact between the boiler water glass and this gasket. You should replace the gasket and the new boiler level glass. To replace the boiler level glass and gasket, see the section How to install the Boiler Level Glass into the Boiler Level Glass Assembly Differences between Boiler Level Glass and Magnetic Level Glass Main Difference: The main difference between these two types of Boiler Level Glass can be found in the safety that the Magnetic Level Glass provides. Through the use of special gaskets made of MICA. The transparent level glass can also be used in systems with stronger liquids, but glass is always a danger point when compared to the sealed tube that makes up the magnetic level glass. In fact, the latter is recommended when it comes to testing toxic liquids. An additional level of safety can also be achieved by equipping the Magnetic Level Glass with a camera. This allows the level to be detected remotely, from the control room, without having to be physically present at the plant. It also gives you the ability to remotely activate electrical circuits. If maintenance costs are considered, the Magnetic Level Glasses are still the best choice, as their maintenance costs are almost zero. But if using a Glass Level Glass, wear of the insulating gaskets for the glass, as well as the glass itself, must be taken into account. Although the cost is very low, in installations with multiple Boiler Level Glasses, costs can add up. Magnetic Level Glasses can also be made with longer connections, as Glass Level Glasses, longer than 4 inches, will experience bending that can damage the glass Although they are used in similar applications, the differences between these Level Glasses are significant and affect not only the safety of the plant but also the maintenance costs of the plant.
